I, Dana, Killed a Rattlesnake is the coming of age story of a boy with a girl’s name, born in Minnesota to parents that some may label, “Christian Fundamentalists” or “Holy Rollers.” The family attends prayer meetings, speak in tongues and take the Bible as the literal word of God. Dana is a boy with a girl-dominated name, the oldest of six children, his father fighting in Viet Nam at the time of his birth.

The ever-nomadic family moves 16 times in 18 years from small town to small town between Minnesota, Idaho and North Dakota. The rural settings and the times (mostly set in the 1970's) combine for fantastic adventures with a cast of unusually colorful characters including super-hippy Roger Brown who introduces himself for the first time wearing a diver’s mask to shield his eyes from insects as he drives his pickup truck without a windshield. He’s difficult to understand, at first because he has a snorkel in his mouth and after he removes it because he speaks a strange hippy language that Dana never heard before. 

This first book documents Dana’s coming of age story from birth to the end of the world in 1980, his family on the top of a mountain with another family, blowing trumpets to usher in the rapture on New Year’s Eve. Dana just turned 13 and desperately wants to kiss a girl before the world ends. I, Dana, Killed a Rattlesnake is 280 pages with a word count of 94,596. It is written first-person with comedic overtones.  Readers may experience a myriad of emotions but mostly puzzled happiness and relief. The incredible thing is that it all happened!
